Yup...dowels, long ratchet extensions, hoses...any number of items will let
you locate where a sound is coming from:)


My only worry would be with the new rocker/lifter would be you might need a
different thickness lash cap to get things kosher..

engine running. I think it's the driver's side. A dowel rod to the edge of
the valve cover almost works as good as a stethoscope. I'll get a new rocker
and stud and open it up.

I start by taking a listen w/ a stethoscope, that gives you an idea as to
where the bad lifter is..  

Pop the valve cover and you should be able to find one that's looser then
all the others, or showing wear on the cam..  Do you have a valve spring
compressor?
