The version I heard was that after the pistons were manufactured they
were sorted into lots to the nearest 0.0002" (2/10,000). After the
cylinders were honed they were similarly measured and a piston from the
best-matching bin went into each hole.

I can tell you that when we replaced the pistons in my 1973 450SL with
higher-compression parts at 103,000 miles, the oil grooves
(circumferential machined grooves) were still quite apparent. See the
attached scan.
