[W126 Coupe] Water leak in rear passenger side

Thanks Barry and Dick for the info. Forgive me for sounding stupid Barry,
but do you mean the actual chrome strip attached to the rear side window
itself? The reason I ask is because even though I have this on my suspect
list, I have already placed a piece of paper towel on inside of the door
pillar (under the strip) expecting it to get wet after rain by water running
down the inner pillar, under the bottom door trim and under the carpet to
the rear footwell. But so far no results (could be because of only very
light rain in the last few days). I probably didn't use the correct
terminology in my original post on the subject when I said "rear window". I
actually meant I suspect the top of the rear windshield (small drain above
the outer seal and chrome strip). It still could be this strip that both of
you mentioned. It's just typical that since I have been placing pieces of
paper towel at suspected entry points, it hasn't rained much and pouring
jugs of water doesn't work. It seems to require a constant hard rain storm
with fairly high wind to get inside in the first place. But when it does,
you have your own personal paddling pool in the rear right footwell with no
indication of wetness in the carpet where it came from. It looks like I am
going to need to commit to removing front and rear seats as well as inner
door trim as well as the fitted carpet itself to locate this problem, but
still hoping I can find the entry point without doing this. Any hints and
tips on locating the entry point without ripping the car apart (much) is
welcomed.
Thanks again,
Vance.

Vance,
I looked for the same type of leak for over two years. Take off the chrome
piece attached to the
rear window pillar and see if there are signs of water getting behind it, If
there is { I had signs of
rust] the water is now going to go to the inside of the car. I silicone that
plate back in and problem
was solved.

Hello Vance and welcome back!
It seems this subject was just recently covered in the past month or so.
The rear coupe side windows have a unique complete assembly for both the
inner and outer brushes that is attached with a urethane rubber seal just
under the chrome trim strip above the door strike on the rear window pillar.
You might want to start there and see if in fact water is running right down
to the rear foot well from where the door meets the rear pillar, leaving the
rest of the car dry.
As for the sunroof drains, I just use an extension wand with compressor air
and blow/listen for the air escaping in the wheel wells.

Dick

Long time since my last post. Have been following the recent posts on the
water leak problem as I have the same problem except on the passenger side.
Although I am in the UK, the car is LHD (1991 560 SEC Euro). I have checked
what seems all the usual suspects as in the posts on the subject by
strategically placing pieces of paper towel at suspected entry points. So
far there has been no clue to how so much water is getting in to the rear
footwell. The trunk is as dry as a bone as is the front and rear drivers
side. There was an indication that the front passenger side was wet, but
that was just after I discovered I had a leak in the first place and put it
down to the water sloshing to the front under braking. Since I have removed
the front floor mats, there is no evidence of water getting in from that
end. There is however an indication that it could be getting in from the top
of the rear window seal, as the rear window is wet on the inside (but not
just the rhs). I initially put this down to condensation and still could be,
as there doesn't seem to be enough water to cause such a pool in the rear
footwell. I was wondering if I should silicone the top rear window drain to
confirm my suspicion and possibly cure the problem at the same time. Or if
it is a bad idea to silicone this drain. Would appreciate your thoughts on
the subject.
Regards,
Vance.
