Well Josh,
It isn't the first time someone drained the oil, got called away and forgot to put the drain plug back or even the oil.
Problem was discovered half way down the road when it was too late. I have seen this a few times in my life long career as a mechanic. Oil is put in with the hope that things will be ok, but the damage is already done, running the engine at that point only serves to compound the problem.

The engine has been run without oil at one point to cause the initial damage. Oil has obviously been added after the fact but the damage is already done and later on the engine blows.
It happened shortly after purchasing the car as I understand it, correct?

Nah, I bought it broken, I was after a good shell.
I was looking for a project, and I'm NOT overly inclined to body work. Wrenching is absolutely fine, though. I like digging into an engine just to keep my hands and mind busy.
I didn't suspect that the engine was this badly broken though, and was in progress of getting ready to pull the cams and bearings to haul them to a local cam grinder to have them brought back up to spec when I found the carnage.
That makes sense about how it could have happened to have that pattern of damage and indications of overheating, though.
I was scratching my head on how it ended up with overheating, oil starvation signs, as well as the hopped timing that apparently killed the left bank!
