I agree with Andy's comments on pinstripping. I have a 1983 SEC and the very
thin stripes look great. When I got the car they did not have pinstrips but I
put them on right away and it improves the looks, AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED.

My 86 560 SEL had pinstripes, very well done. BTW, years ago my brother had a
Z28 Camero and when he had it repainted the pinstripes were embedded into the
paint. Can't imagine how this was done, but when you ran your hand over it was
completed smooth following the contours of the paint. On all the original
brochure copies I have, no pinstripes are shown.

My car loves me too much and doesn't want me to leave. The driver's side
inside door lock handle does not open the door any more. I have to lower
the window and use the outside handle. There is now no resistance on the
inside handle, so I assume that a cable has either broken or become
detached. How do I fix the problem?
Thanks..Barry

Hello, I recently replaced my steering wheel and followed the instructions
given by Axel and Gerry Van Zandt. which you can find in the archives. To make
it easy:
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
2. Remove passenger side carpet and remove black plastic cover from footwell
held in by 10mm nut . There should be a warning sticker on this cover that
specifies disconnecting battery and red plug when working on airbag or seat belt
pre-tensioner if so equipped.
3. Find the red plug about 1"X2" on the right side and unplug it.
The rest is the same as what Axel describes.
You will need to enter the radio code if your car is equipped with the OEM
Becker GP radio.
Here's what my new steering wheel looks like thanks to all your help.

The tool you need to remove the airbag is a Torx bit. The size is T-30 and get a
long one so that it can reach the heads which sit fairly deep in the steering
wheel.
?
Also, make sure you extend the steering wheel to have more space behind the
steering wheel to work with.
?
To avoid any risk of blowing the airbag while you're working on it, I'd
recommend disconnecting the battery half an hour before you start removing the
airbag.

Axel J. Wulff

Barry;
Remove the inner door panel. The door handle operates a rod to the latch
mechanism, not a cable, and the handle assembly is a casting that is known to
break. Not dificult to replace.

I am in Coram, just south of Port Jefferson (north shore) - we go out of
Cedar Beach, only a 19' Rinker (with a home built 325Hp V8 baby!) some
call it the 19' jet-ski, my wife just calls it "....slow down!!!!" - but
we have a blast wake-boarding. I'm still trying to find the "Old Lady"
selling her E55 ANG for some good conversation, but even they are
stuck-up around here!
Wow this topic brought up a lot of comments. I would dare suggest a
Mustang which has always been a top performer at the $/performance
ratio. I've owned more than anyone would care to read about. One day I'd
love to own a 65SL or SLR, or Viper (argh!) ... but the real world being
what it is, and being a Mechanical Engineer, I can appreciate the
technology, just never earn the $ to own it. Oh well... hence the Super
Charger on the SEC ... and yes, I know, I promised the plans, and still
will post them. The good news is I've logged 15K+ miles on the build
with absolutely no problems.
Seems like the consensus of the replies is the Jeep is good, but the
Subaru is better. I hate to sell out, but I have to agree.
BTW: I did sell out my manhood and owned a Mini-van for < 24hrs.
Unfortunately we lost the twins the same day I picked up the car. Fait?
I don't know. But I have to admit, I almost liked it?!?
Be good Ladys & Gents
PS. Are there any get-togethers in the North-East? I'd like to put faces
on the emails.
Thank You,

A Long Island boy. I have family in Comack, and my uncle used to keep
his boat up at Montauk Point. We have quite a few of the same "never
see off road" SUVs here in Colorado. It is kind of like my other
favorite, the little old lady driving the E55 AMG 45 in the right lane.
With all the off road trials and camping here, I wouldn't mind having a
Land Rover Defender to screw around in.
As far as sliding the car around. I would do that in the SEC, the SEL,
the work truck, whatever. I grew up having to chase everybody on diirt
back roads. They had old trucks with 350s and 454s. I had a 1980 Mazda
626. The only way I could keep up was by out driving them around the
corners.

I and a few people I know have Jeep Grand Cherokee. I need mine to tow
my boat in the summer. They drive excellent, great motor, great interior
& very comfortable, are great in snow, except, um, the tranny goes to
crap by 50K miles. So if you don't mind spending $3K every 50K miles to
replace the tranny, and 12 MPG if you are lucky - it's a great car.
On the foreign side, Subaru has been making excellent 4WD cars and
wagons for decades - extremely reliable, relatively affordable, and get
good milage (25-30+ is normal).
But I have to be honest, I don't understand our generation's need for
SUVs. I live on Long Island NY, the yuppie capital of the world as far
as I am concerned. Everyone has to have the biggest SUV, go drive to the
diner and to the mall. The most off-road they see is a puddle in the
road, and most swerve around those as well. The only reason I have it is
for my boat.
I have 2 kids, and we drove them around from birth, first in my Mustang,
then in a Cougar. Yes, it is a little inconvenient, but with the price
of gas, and I don't care what SUV you buy (even 4 or 6 cyl), you are not
going to get more than 20 MPG if you are lucky - it is simply a matter
of aerodynamics - they have a large profile, and that is what you are
pushing through the wind. Personally I feel than unless you are a
doctor, police, firefighter, or other critical - on demand person, or
you live in a real remote location, most roads are cleared within hours
of a snow-fall. Actually I enjoy sliding my SEC around on a snowy road -
I think it makes you a better driver as you learn how to get yourself
out of trouble. Most people in SUVs have no clue and think the car is
invincible until they are upside down in a snow bank, and then feel it's
the car maker's fault.
So my long-winded answer is I've had good experience with Subaru wagon.
You may want to look at 4wd wagons for the best compromise in MPG &
utility. Hope it helps.
Thank You,

Now that we are expecting our first little rug rat, it is time to get my
wife a new car. We were thinking a small SUV, being in Colorado AWD can
have its benefits. I was wondering if anybody has any opinions, likes
or dislikes about small SUV models or other ideas. Since my 1 drivable
SEC is in the garage being torn apart, and my other SEC had the ass end
of it ripped out, those are out. Plus it is a pain in the ass trying to
get a baby seat in the back!

SEC is in the garage being torn apart, and my other SEC had the ass end

I have a 1989 SEC, black (040) over parchment leather. My car has
gold pinstripes that were applied by an aftermarket pinstriper of
national acclaim..
You can see some photos of the striping at:

in the photo album at:

I think it looks fine. I would never (personally) have pinstriping
applied to one of my cars, but I have never minded the fact that my
SEC has it, and it was not a "make or break" factor in purchasing my
car as it was done very nicely.
Cheers,

I believe pinstriping is a total SoCal phenom started by the likes of Dean
Jeffries and Von Dutch. The reality was that you had no money left to paint your
hot rod after all the modifications were done so you left it in primer. To make
it "cool" you pinstriped your car. The dealers try to "add" everything they
could get away with and add to what they are already making. Pinstriping was and
is not that popular outside of the USA so it was never offered by the foreign
manufacturers except when it was part of the graphics incorporated from new. On
some cars pinstriping makes it look good. I always ask myself before I invest
"does it make it look better? Or does it make it go faster". We all have
different tastes but enjoy the love for the same great SEC.

The rust is only seen by looking up at the bottom edge of the rear
window while inside the trunk - I presume regardless the repair would
be similar - did a shop do this for you? If so what did it cost -
Thanks - Mark

Thanks for you help guys. It is a fuel pump relay. No buzzing sound when
contact is on .Also can anyone advise if there is any difference between
heads on Euro spec and US model. My engine is burning some oil and I have to
address that problem .I was told to see if I can get away with valve seal
replacement only.

US and Euro FPR's are the same for the Gen II cars. The last iteration
will allow for 50-100 extra RPM a WOT.
How many miles are on your car? What weight oil are you running?
If you can't get to VGS's right away, running Valvoline 20/50 Racing
along w/ 1Qt. Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer will cut back on your oil
consumption dramatically!

HI AGAIN GUYS,
I HAD THE FORTUNE OF HAVING THE FIRST 5 WINNING NUMBERS PLAYING POWERBALL
IN WISCONSIN. I ACTUALLY WON SEPTEMBER 25th, 2007, BUT DID NOT KNOW UNTIL I
WENT BACK UP TO WISCONSIN TO PLAY AGAIN AND CHECKED MY OLD TICKETS. I WAS TOLD
THE AMOUNT WAS TOO LARGE TO PAY OUT AT THE BP STATION. IT WAS A SATURDAY NIGHT,
SO I IMMEDIATELY MADE PLANS TO RETURN TO WISCONSIN ON MONDAY MORNING TO CLAIM MY
PRIZE WHICH WAS $200,000! I WENT TO WISCONSIN THAT MONDAY MORNING AT 6 A.M. AND
ARRIVED AT 8:06 A.M. AND CLAIMED MY PRIZE. STILL IS AMAZING TO ME.
MY NEXT STOP AFTER THAT WAS TO FIND MYSELF A COOLER CAR THAN THE 2003
ACURA CL THAT I WAS DRIVING, SO I BOUGHT A 2006 BMW M5 WITH 15K MILES ON IT. I
AM STILL GETTING USED TO THE ODD SHIFTS OF THE SMG TRANNY IN AUTOMATIC MODE, AND
THE I DRIVE, REALLY DROVE ME CRAZY FOR ABOUT A WEEK. NOW, HOWEVER, ALL IS
FORGIVEN WITH ALL OF THAT, EXCEPT I REALLY WANT TO KNOW ABOUT FINDING A WAY TO
DISABLE THE SPEED GOVERNOR BEFORE I DRIVE THE CAR OUT TO VEGAS IN JUNE. THERE
IS A WEALTH OF AUTOMOTIVE KNOWLEDGE HERE, SO, I THOUGHT I WOULD ASK HERE FIRST.
I KNOW THIS CAR WILL RIP WAAY PAST 155 MPH AND I WOULD LOVE TO FIND OUT ON SOME
OF THAT OPEN ROAD OUT IN UTAH, AND NEVADA AND MAYBE EVEN SOME IN CALIFORNIA IF I
CAN FIND SOME WITHOUT THE EYE IN THE SKY AROUND AS WELL AS LAND BASED POLICE.
SINCERELY,
JOHN
P.S. I HAVE 5 MONTHS UNTIL MY VEGAS TRIP, SO MAYBE SOMEONE KNOWS SOMEONE WITH
AN M5 THAT THEY CAN ASK. I KNOW DINAN OFFERS TUNING TO DISABLE THE GOVERNOR,
BUT I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO SPEND ANOTHER $40K.

I'd add my 2-cents to this debate.
I had this problem on my car and had a body shop do the repairs.
On my car the window sill had rusted through and the body shop replaced the
entire sheet (you see the seams with the trunk lid open) with new metal. At the
time I did not know that MB provides a replacement panel. Had I known, I would
certainly have gone that way instead of letting the body shop fabricate a piece.
The entire job cost about $1,400 (paint, metal work, new window gasket, rear
window in and out).
However, what can turn this job into a $3,000 affair is if the rear window
cracks at any point in the process. If the rear window has any deliamination
(white fog along the edges), cracking is more likely to happen, resulting in the
need for a new window $1,300, gasket $160 and installtion).
My advice would be to find a very experienced glass guy to handle the rear
window.

David,
Having two daughters, a 5 yr. old?and an 11 month old, I have an '02 Jeep Grand
Cherokee. It's my third one and they all were new when I got them. The first one
was a '94 followed by a '98. The first two I had when I lived in Louisville
where there was snow several times a year. They have all gotten about the same,
14 mpg, in town. I've currently got around 56k on the '02 and the only problems
I've had have all been with the elec. window lifts. I've had to replace 6 of
them. I've been told its a common problem down here in Florida. The heat weakens
the plastic guides and they break. I've also had to replace the battery twice
for the same reason. Heat is harder on batteries than cold.
My wife and I are thinking of replacing?the Grand?later this year with either a
2 to 3 year old E320/350 wagon or a new C class wagon. If it were possible to a
find a W124 in mint, low mileage condition, I'd definitely buy it.
Congrats on your coming family addition.

I am fairly certain, as are others that the SEC did not come factory direct with
the pinstripes. If you take a look at the pictures the 2 other SECs do not have
pinstriping. Although Gary has done some cool stuff on the inside of the door
with pin striping.

Indeed Ronny, that was my point. Although pinstriping started here I have only
seen one SEC with pinstriping. In fact the car also had chrome fender covers and
gold plated badging and blacked out windows. When we obtained our '94 E320, the
dealer had already put pinstriping on the brand new car.? I took it to my
painter and had it removed for $200. He used a buffer and carefully removed it.
Personally I do not like pinstriping unless it is a real hot rod or a '65
Pontiac GTO which I believe came from the factory that way.

I
think it looks fine. I would never (personally) have pinstriping applied to
one of my cars, but I have never minded the fact that my SEC has it, and it
was not a "make or break" factor in purchasing my car as it was done very
nicely.?

Alex,
Thank you very much for your help.
I'll find the torx wrench based on your specifications. Your suggestion to wait
30 minutes from battery disconnection is a new one(compared to the MB car
manual) but it makes sense to do it in order to ensure that the airbag does not
blow up unnecessarily.
On the mechanic/shop question, is there anyone out there who can help me?
Thanks.
Best regards,
Soy Medina

The tool you need to remove the airbag is a Torx bit. The size is T-30 and get a
long one so that it can reach the heads which sit fairly deep in the steering
wheel.
Also, make sure you extend the steering wheel to have more space behind the
steering wheel to work with.
To avoid any risk of blowing the airbag while you're working on it, I'd
recommend disconnecting the battery half an hour before you start removing the
airbag.Regards, Axel J. Wulff610-731-5453 Cellular610-572-4611 Home> Date: Sat,
