[W126 Coupe] Rear Window Seal Rust

Carl, I have completely re-done my rear window ('89). There are 2 pieces
of metal at the bottom of the window. One goes all the way down behind
the rear seats. The other is the 'outside' piece. They are not welded together
in a traditional manner, so water gets trapped between them, greatly
increasing the chance for rust. I had 3 areas of about 2" across and 1"
deep, totally rusted out. Don't buy the inside part. It was $700 about 4
years ago. A good body shop can easily fabricate the thickness and
shape you need for the total width. Have them make it from stainless.
I also had a large rusted piece on the side of the window. Go figure.
After going through all of that, I still can't figure how one could prevent
rust at the rear window, permanently. Maybe a new seal every 3 to 4
years, treated with Rubbercare from Wurth would do it. Using a sealant
lifts the rubber from the metal, so that creates a different problem. Also,
if you trap moisture between the metal and the sealant, rust is sure to
appear. It's easy to remove and re-install the window. You can do it yourself.

Hi Jonathan,
If anyone kows the answer to this question you are it.
About the rust under the rear window. I did see one near Ramona California, it was for sale at a used car lot. When I opened the trunk there it was and perforated right through. I've read about this problem in the Mercedes Enthusiast magazine and I checked out my car and I'm happy to say it's ok.
My question to you is this: By any chance is there a double layer of sheet metal there which could be pumped full of rust protectant to prevent this from happening?

Well, the glass runs about 1100, and rust repair is very much a case by case basis. One may have just a bit of surface rust that just needs tending/prepping. While others can have half the sheet metal missing underneath. I've heard anywhere from 1500 to 3K depending on just how much work was needed.

Are you talking the ledge? Usually when it leaks the water get in and rusts that ledge out, which means taking out the window, having that ledge cut out (or repaired) and the window put back in with new seals (or replaced if the glass itself is bad too). I just had it done on my SEC.

Hi All - Looking for some help to understand cost to have the rear
window seal repaired correctly. Only visible rust is under the center
of the rear window, noticed when viewing from the inside of the trunk.
Appreciate any input.
