My 4 cents ($0.02 per car):

W163 ML320
Subaru Outback

Both great cars, both light on gas (when compared to other SUVS and Wagons).

Although ML320s have a few cosmetic issues, they are mechanically very sound
for an American Benz, and lightly used, they are very affordable.

Subarus in general are great fun to drive in the snow, but I wouldn't know.

Heya, I'm a newcomer to this list, but I'll chip in as well.

On the topic of Subaru cars, I had a great little Subaru sedan, and even 
in the compact market, they had decent features for toting rugrats around.
If you don't mind the new car complexities and expense, the WRX or WRX 
STI are fun toys that hide under a "practical" exterior appearance.
The base model Impreza gets a bit better mileage than either of the 
turbo trim cars, with basically the same features other than the power 
train.
