Heya, I'm a newcomer to this list, but I'll chip in as well.

On the topic of Subaru cars, I had a great little Subaru sedan, and even 
in the compact market, they had decent features for toting rugrats around.
If you don't mind the new car complexities and expense, the WRX or WRX 
STI are fun toys that hide under a "practical" exterior appearance.
The base model Impreza gets a bit better mileage than either of the 
turbo trim cars, with basically the same features other than the power 
train.
