[W126 Coupe] Transmission "Clunk" - But only when selecting ReverseGear

Thanks for the many posts on this. I think as Jonathan suggested my
transmission may be starting to get sick (170k miles). But I'll get
someone to check all suggestions made, flex discs, o-ring/seal, clutch
plates, etc. I'm very intrigued by the effect of the bottle of lucas
transmission fix !

Since 100k miles I have changed the fluid/filter every 30k, and as
someone else suggested I now use the parking brake every time before
selecting park, which I did not used to do which meant the car always
rolled slightly forward or back against the tranny when the footbrake
was released, which can't have been doing the tranny any good.

I might try some of that Lucas stuff at home in my next cocktail J

Cheers,

Mike

Subject: [W126 Coupe] Transmission "Clunk" - But only when selecting
ReverseGear

On my 1988 560SEC the auto transmission (original) works great in
forward gears, with very smooth change-ups. I've had the trans fluid
changed at recommended intervals. But on selecting reverse gear there
is a big clunk and the car initially jolts backwards, sometimes quite
violently, with or without the brake pedal pressed.

I've searched the archives and can't see anything specific to reverse
gear. Does anyone know if there is an adjustment or anything to remedy
this ?

I'd not want to do anything that may affect the forward gears as they
are currently very smooth, but appreciate any help if anyone else has
had this.

Cheers,

Mike
