[W126 Coupe] Gear Shift Lever Removal

Can someone explain how to remove the gear shift lever (knob)?  I got as far as removing the wood piece around the gear shift; but, no luck in loosening the two bolts that hold the gear shift laver.  How do I get a tool in place to loosen up the bolts?  I looked through the archives to no avail.Thanks,Camran
