Dick,
Fantastic. That's a lot of detail, just what I need. I have the CDs but
didn't think they would help much. Wrong again I guess. I'll check it out.
I've just been hesitant because of problems I had with my old 250 years ago.
I know Boston. I've worked up there a few times in the 80s as a construction
electrician on power houses. I love it up there.
Thanks again,
Pete

Hi Pete:
The steps are pretty much as follows:
Wiper motor, drains and air intake cover.
Lift the hood,
remove the wiper arms, renew the rubber wiper arm seals
remove the rubber seal at the front of the wiper motor area (first firewall)
remove the plastic press fit clip on driver's side (US) securing the (2)
halves
remove the rubber seal along the windscreen that is pressed onto the plastic
wiper motor cover
now you are free to remove the two halves of the plastic wiper motor cover
completely
Side reveals.
remove the plastic press plug at the base of the windscreen in each corner
near the drain. This is pressed in at the base of the rubber reveal seal
that runs up to the roof line on either side of the windscreen.
Using a pick, carefully lift the rubber (welt) just enough to locate the
reveal screws along the edge of the stainless metal plate and windscreen.
Remove all. (I think it's just 2 or 3 on either side).
Now the reveal is ready for removal. The reveal is held down by two rivets
at the roof line. To release the reveal, you carefully slide upward to free
the notches in the reveal from the rivet heads. Careful as too much upward
force will scratch your roof paint once it breaks free. Lift both reveals
away. The stainless vertical strip is connected tot he upper windscreen
trim pieces. Just slide these free (perhaps a 1/2 inch). Now you can
polish the stainless and treat the rubber or renew as you see fit.
Remove top windscreen two-piece aluminum trim.
Slide the center mending plate to one side. Use a pick or other tool. Take
care not to scratch once again. The pieces are held down by a pressure clip
that is riveted to the roof line at various points. Locate and lift with a
pick at each point and the trim will pop off as you go. Renew any broken
clips, trim caps, and trim as needed.
That's my recall, so not perfect I'm sure. Check the CD-Rom manual for any
further detail needed. The whole job is maybe 20 minutes for removal. I've
done it 4-6 times as glass replacement is common and frequently needed in
Boston where they do not have a clue on how to keep the road from rising up
to meet you!
Regards,
Dick

I need to remove the trim around the windshield of my 1983 500 SEC. My
windshield is cracked on the passenger side and leaks around the top. I have
another good windshield on a parts car but am not ready to switch until I'm
ready to harvest the good dash out of it too. My SEC dash has a cap on it so
I'm sure it's probably in bad shape. I think a temporary sealant will work
for a while. My parts car is a 1984 500SEL but my measurements look like the
windshield will swap even if the back window wont. I thought about digging
into the SEL's trim to check it out but don't want to tear it up if I don't
have to.
Thanks for any help,
Pete Williams
