[W126 Coupe] Sauber modifications

Yeah...very little history on Sauber engines.except they developed racing
engines putting out over 600 hp from the stock M117 bottom ends.
Try dynoing the engine? If I had to guess, I think the modifications would
be on the top end, things like valve springs, camshafts, intake.

Willard,
To my knowledge anything Sauber would have done would be rare and difficult
to identify.
I take it the car did not come with any paper work etc.
W/o being there to inspect/check over and to Really know take apart/measure
etc it will be impossible to comment this way or that.

My 1991 560 SEC has a Euro motor allegedly rated at 300+ horsepower. I
bought this car a year ago from a group in Los Angeles that was importing
them from Japan and converting them for the US. My car has a large decal on
the driver side valve cover that says "Powered by Sauber". I am unable to
find any other indications that the car was modified by Sauber Motorsports
in Switzerland and my internet searches have resulted in no results. Can
anyone shed some light on this...were all Euro models "Powered by Sauber",
did they provide after market mods ala AMG, etc?
I do know that Sauber worked on special projects with Mercedes during the
late 80's and early 90's but eventually began working more and more with BMW
until BMW acquired the company in 2003-2005.
Thanks in advance for any input,
Willard Tredway

A good source of info concerning timing chain guide failure and other
maintenance alerts is at the site www.mercedessource.com
Go to the tech help section and click on maintenance alerts and also the
manual section.
The manual section has a good discussion of the timing chain guide issue and
the alert section has good discussion of the chain, alternator brushes, and
power steering pump.

I still believe that there is an emergency cable release for the
trunk lock under the left rear seat. It is shown in Job 82-0980 for
cars with and without rear electric seat adjustment.

Perhaps you are right Steve. It must be either right under the seat
cushion. I've never seen it on any of the late model sedans I've ripped
apart. Perhaps it's in the wire trough.

I use a Virtual Drive
(http://www.farstone.com/software/virtualdrive-pro.htm) to run my manuals.
This lets me run the manual much faster than a CD based system, something
approaching 100X. I put my Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) in there too.
Depends what I want, service or EPC, it can be loaded into the virtual drive
and run.

Thanks Jonathan; I'll be taking the car in for a 60K maintenance and I'll
have the whole thing done at that time. Thanks for your advice.

Camran,Yes, were the car in my possession I would @ the minimum change out
the chain rails and the oil line clips. I would check stretch and were you
more then a couple of degrees off then tend to the
chain/tensioner.JonathanCamran Nassiri wrote:

now a major concern. 20 year old plastic that's been heat cycled countless
times is not nearly as forgiving as it once was. Also, do NOT use aftermarket
tensioners..I gave up on them about 2 years ago after I had a number of
instances where the car would still slap w/ a fresh chain/rails and
aftermarket tensioner. Genuine tensioners are expensive but worth it.Were
the car mine, I would not drive it until I had everything changed out.Don't

If you have the MB Service Library CDs, you can use my Index to
better (and quicker) access the files, as long as you can get the CDs
