EGR is more like breathing farts, while both these things may be of dubious merit the air pump and EGR are required if you need a smog test. The air pump only works at coolant temps below 60C. EGR on the other hand is a key item if your area tests for NOX. Any IM240 dyno test will include NOX.

A few words of caution here, all emission systems are covered by the EPA mandate and tampering with these are forbidden. What you do with your own car is your own business however, remember this is a public forum and what you write is fair game. Explaining that such and such system is only needed on cold start or that breathing farts is not a great idea if fine. That said advocating and admitting that members do these modifications should not be posted for your own protection.

Ditto here re. the air pump. I removed the belt on my 89 560 and passed NY inspection. It is still on the car but I'm thinking of recycling it for more use as an anchor for my boat.

One thing I have done is to remove and plug the vac. Line to the EGR valve. In previous American cars that I have rebuilt motors I saw that cars without ERG have cleaner intake runner, valves, etc. I guess it's like person smoking vs. not smoking. Don't know if there are any other pros or cons to this.

I have not pulled the SEC motor apart (and hope I won't have to anytime soon) but I assume it will help keep it's lungs cleaner going forward.

This does need to be reconnected at inspection though.
