RE: MBCOUPES Digest, Vol 38, Issue 17
I have had my Mercedes do the same thing...it was a bad alternator that
discharged the battery...then the lights and all instrumentation "just
went dead"...the tachometer even went 'wild' just before it died and my
radio even quit....and then.....the car just stopped. A bad battery cell
(that shorts after warming up) might do the same thing...or a similar
thing. Fix: New (rebuilt) alternator and new battery.

Larry Martin

I'd still go with the voltage regulator idea, especially if the year-old
in there now is an aftermarket product. Mine died, same symptoms, on the
way to a Kansas City MBCoupes Fest a few years ago, and I almost missed
the opening Captain Morgan's!
The alternator itself is darned near indestructible.

Bad cell in battery or corroded battery terminals.

Well gang, thanks for all your suggestions. I found a local mechanic
that works on foreign cars here - lots of strange stuff, Borgward,
DKW, Jaguar, Audi, Mercedes and about every orphan you could think of.
Looks like the foreign car shops I remember from the sixties. Put in a
used brush pack in it and it didn't help. No output from the
alternator, so a rebuilt is coming from Denver overnight. Hopefully
will be back on the road tomorrow. I'll let you all know when I get
back home.

If I am right, the Audi was the child from the married couple DKW and
NSU.

Any suggestions on the best brand of new tires for a 1985 SEC? Think
there is a set of Michelins
on now.
Live in Southern California, looking for great
performance in some rain and warm weather.
Thanks,
Robert

There is a wide range of performance levels available. For great
all-purpose use (as compared to, say, street racing), I am quite
impressed by the Michelin "Pilot Exalto AS" and the Bridgestone "Turanza
Serenity."
<http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=86>
ireModel=Pilot+Exalto+A%2FS>
After they are mounted, you will find that on typical bumpy, dirty
streets they stick as well as or even better than "High Performance"
tires. They are surely more forgiving!
