Hello,
I am new to your site but I have had the same problem happen in
different cars. It most likely is your alternator not charging your
battery. If it was your battery, the car wouldn't die as you described
because the alternator should keep the curent going. The fact that it
was night and the lights were drawing your battery empty and when it
cooled down it would start again is a sure sign that the alternator is
not charging. If your lucky, it could just be a loose belt, if not you
need a new alternator.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] Mercedes On-the-Road with problems
Well here I am 550 miles from home, and my normally reliable '87
560SEC is dead in the water...
Not really dead, but dyeing. At night, with the headlights on. After
searching out a place to eat here in Chadron, Nebraska, my SEC lights
started acting funny. First the Anti-lock indicator came on, then a
short while later the dash lights went out and the headlights too! I
pulled over to the side of the road and then the engine died. Great.
Tried to re-start it and it acted like it had a dead battery. So I
called AAA - after waiting on the phone for what seems like hours
(maybe only 40 minutes), they said the were having a problem finding
someone to tow me. And didn't know how long it would take...
So I tried to start the car again. IT STARTED RIGHT UP! So I headed
back to the motel - about a mile down the road and only 2 blocks to
the motel, it died again - same symptoms. I had enough momentum to
keep me going into the motel parking lot, BUT DEAD AGAIN! After
waiting 15 minutes or so, I was able to pull it into the parking stall
next to my room. So here I am. I have to do a training session
tomorrow (the whole reason for me to be in Chadron), so I won't be
able to look at it until late afternoon. Do you good folks have any
ideas or suggestions?
Pardon me if this is posted twice. I didn't have access to my regular
email address (stratton at illustration.com) and I didn't know if it
would work with is odd address.
