Wow! lotta info to process. I thought I just wanted to hear my radio better.
I can't really say I have a flutter, but I know that from time to time my passenger side speakers crackle, when I adjust from rear to front, they settle down. I have no adjustment to go left to right.
Btw, will I degrade the value of "my Benzo" by upgrading the speakers and Becker unit? I have 213K miles and it's primarily stock besides the rims I just put on.

Yes, I agree it probably isn't your speakers unless the static is coming from only one speaker then it is a bad speaker or its' connection. If you listen to A.M.(amplitude modulation) it goes with the territory, static with all but very strong signals especially during the day. At night you have skip to enhance the signal to noise ratio(less noise or static) on some stations. F. M. (frequency modulation)on the other hand usually sounds like a flutter(not static) caused by weak line of sight signals or signals that bounce off buildings(city living). If you experience static not flutter on A.M. , F. M. and tape play back, I would expect it is a leaky capacitor or bad transistor in your preamp output of your radio. If you have static only on A. M. And F. M. it could also be a bad antenna or antenna connection .If you fade audio output from right to left channel and the static is only heard in one channel, I suggest you have your head set/ radio and the amp.on that
channel(with static) checked out. My bet is a bad amp.if only in one channel has the static.
If you just want new speakers, you get more bang(improved listening ) for your buck by replacing the rear speakers with the largest physical size that will fit. More importantly buy speakers with a high efficiency rating , 90 db or above is preferable but they cost more bucks. These speakers will however provide clear and precise audio at lower volume levels as well as when you are driving them. Inefficient cheap speakers can sound good at high volume levels but fidelity is lost at low to mid levels.
Sorry for being so wordy and these are just my opinions. I hope it helps.
