[W126 Coupe] P1800 ES

I bought a new 1800 ES in about 1972...bright lemon yellow with black
interior. It would have been a perfect car if Volvo had jacked the body up and
installed a BMW 2002 motor, transmission, chassis and running gear under it
instead of the tractor motor, transmission, and suspension they did install.
Always made heads turn but rough riding and tiring to drive on long trips.

Mitch Carr's in Kensington (I'm on a slow connection or I'd look it up
for you, but I know it comes up on yellowpages.com). It's about 2 miles
from White Flint Mall. They only do MB there and they do it well.

Hi,
I recently purchased a 1991 560sec with 130K miles paid $3K
and got
four additional new tires on some fancy rims. It started right
away and
and I test drove it and also followed behind while the seller
drove it.
I did not see any smoke.
However in the mornings if I warm it up for about ten minutes
it
smokes quite a bit and also during stop and go driving.
My mechanic has since tuned it up and it has passed MD
inspection,
but the smoking persists. He says he does not have the right
tools nor
much experience with mb to do a thorough job.
I am looking for a specialist in my neck of the woods, VA, MD
or DC.
I will be greatful for any suggestions or references. This car
really
holds my fancy.
Kind Regards,
Baldwin

I'll assume this is blue smoke, in which case @ 130K your valve guides have
either led a Very hard life or your valve guide seals are spent.
FYI, letting the car idle to warm up is nothing but tough on the engine and
an utter waste of resources. The ICE is Very inefficient at idle.
What weight oil are you running?

I'm not sure if you know this, but this is actually a MB concept car
that is more than 10 years old, it heavily influenced
the design of the previous generation S-class, as can be seen by the
headlights. It also heavily influenced the
previous generation CL, as can be seen by the overall body shape and
roofline.
I never liked this concept car all that much, although certain
details are nice. But it is clearly not a typical Benz,
just a bit of fun by their forward-thinking engineers and stylists -
in an era where their design wasn't as forward-thinking
as it used to be, IMHO.
Dawid
Somebody on this list once said that the SEC shape will age like fine
wine, and I am tending to agree with it.
Hang on to yours, in 10-20 years it'll be a highly desirable classic
methinks.

Hi Everybody,
I would like to present a different perspective on a topic raised a few
weeks ago. A person was trying to decide if he should repair his existing 560SEC
or buy another one for $5k with less mileage. The consensus was either sell
his and buy the other one or buy and keep both.
My '90 560SEC has 177k of HARD miles on it. It is my daily driver and I have
driven it to places and on job sites that would make you cringe (me too on
reflection and I should have told my former employer where to go). It had
finally gotten to the point where I could no longer hold off on getting my valve
guides & seals done and repairing a broken sunroof rail. So I bit the bullet
and drove the car almost 3 hours to a shop somebody on this site recommended
in the LA area. They test drove the car and this is what they came up with in
addition to the valves and sunroof: leaking radiator, 1 fuel pump leaking,
idler control arm bushing (cause of my front end creak) and gas door vacuum
element (what fun when running on empty and your gas door solenoid won't fully
engage). The total cost for all this, including tax, is around $5,300. I also
had to rent a car for 3 weeks (just my luck the afternoon before I brought
it in a Jag was towed in needing the heads done so I lost a few days
). fyi
...Alternator was replaced 2 months ago and the timing belt and tensioner
have around 30k on them.
Now, should I have bagged the car and bought another one that might have all
the maintenance records etc. or am I better off making the repairs to a car
that once the repairs are made I know what I have got. I still need to figure
out why the AC belt keeps shredding but once this is done, all I have left
is some body work and a new paint job and some leather repair. Frankly, I
think the wiser choice is to go with what I have and know. Comments?
I know this is a MB site, but if there are any fans of the old Volvo P1800
out there, the new C30 is awesome..not available in the US yet. I drove a
Turbo Diesel 5 speed (all nomenclature and digital readouts were in
Swedish)..great pickup, solid suspension and this thing was getting 62mpg hwy driving. It
didn't meet CA emissions so Volvo won't sell it in the US yet. Gas version
should be out first. I'm 6'2" 245 pounds and the seat felt good with enough
legroom.

I hate to hijack your email, but I have the same problem... Fix it, or get
rid of it.
I have a '82 380SEC, with unknown miles on it, although I am sure its less
than 150k miles on it. I love driving the car (my first car with more than 4
cylinders) and I would love to buy another one (maybe a little newer...)
However, all the various little pieces of my car that don't work are
starting to bug me, and I don't have enough time or money to fix them all. I
really would like to buy a newer model SEC, something with a bigger engine,
and one that all the little things like power locks, fuel gauges, and
odometers work properly.
Finding a replacement SEC is going to be hard, and I suspect that selling my
not-so-perfect SEC is going to be hard to do, which is why I keep debating
about fixing it up, or selling it. Honestly, I am not looking to get ALOT of
money from the car, I would be happy to just to get what I paid for the car
a few months ago, or trade it in for something else (not sure if anyone
would trade anything for a worn down 380SEC)
I was looking at the local auto listings, and don't see any SECs for sale,
but I do see a couple SELs for sell. I have also been looking at the 190e
cars, as they seem to be rather quick too (smaller engine, but smaller car,
so probably goes quicker than
the 380SEC), but I really like the SEC, and having the bigger engine.
Right now I have parked the SEC and I am driving my '90 Camry around, since
it has A/C, working radio, and everything works properly. In a perfect world
I would like to sell both my SEC and Camry and buy a good condition 560SEC,
but I am sure those cost quite a bit more than what I paid for my existing
SEC.
Things that are broken/wrong:
Odo.meter stopped at 89 thousand miles
Power locks don't work (pump works, locks won't stop going up and down)
Fuel gauge doesn't work
Back seats are not in the best condition, the tops of the seats are tore up
No cruise control
No/minimal A/C (Still haven't bothered to recharge it, although I may
recharge it if I don't sell the car soon)
Engine has started running rough when its cold, sounds like my injectors are
fouled up on a few cylinders.
-Since starting this email the third party radio in the car has also stopped
working for some reason, so right now it doesn't even have a working radio
in it.
When I purchased this car most of these issues existed, and I knew about
most of them when I bought it. I don't even know if anyone would buy this
car...
Any thoughts?
Tad

Very easy. Off tomorrow to the local MB bone yard for replacement parts.

Richard,
Remove the screws that hold the inner panel and wood trim on the glove box
door and then you will see all of the lock mechanism and which pieces need to
be replaced. It is very easy to replace and can be done in minutes.
Good Luck,
John

Hello All,
The beveled pot metal latch that hooks to the vertical pin to keep the door
closed broke yesterday. Anyone know how the door disassembles so as to
replace this piece?
Thanks,

Hi Tom:
With the repair dollar north of $5k and you'll still have more issues to
work on (AC, other suspension components, etc.) I'd say hunt another one
down if possible. This comes from having purchased my share of MB's all
of which needed my time and parts money. Even with my time I average
$5k or more to restore an MB in good condition to start with.
Just my 2. Happy hunting for that next SEC!

I would have loved to hold onto mine. But alas, the flood waters got'er a
couple of years ago and I have been casting about looking for a reasonably
priced replacement ever since. Just last week, I thought, I found something to
tie me over, a, supposedly, pristine 91 SEL, but even that fell through.
The search continues.

Rich,
Glad I could help. I am usually not so sure a car is worth keeping and
repairing as I am with the SEC's, but they usually are and the repairs are
usually so easy when at first they seem complicated. This forum is most helpful
with just about anything and there is a brother or sister here with answers if
you've got questions. I was glad to be able to contribute something after
always asking for help.
Take care

Richard,
Remove the screws that hold the inner panel and wood trim on the glove box
door and then you will see all of the lock mechanism and which pieces need
to be replaced. It is very easy to replace and can be done in minutes.
Good Luck,
John

Hello All,
The beveled pot metal latch that hooks to the vertical pin to keep the
door closed broke yesterday. Anyone know how the door disassembles so as
to replace this piece?
Thanks,

Well
I did have a P1800 ES, steel metallic, red leather 1962 I think, in pristine
condition, which was in the late 80's, moved to England and left it with a
'friend' it was not far from a wreck when I sold two years later, there's a
few ones here in Cape Town, but have never seen the ES version. Motostars
got a red 1965 for R190.000, USD 27.000

website...i left one explaining that all was ok. don't know what happened but
took it all apart and did the tranny refill and everything worked.
your msg wasn't a good connection on my phone so i was wondering did you say
the tranny pan had a drain plug? when i did take it off i did see it had a
bolt on the inside of the pan but i couldn't see how to access it from the
outside of the pan.
also was wondering what a monovalve would cost. for and 88 560 sec. also i
have squeaking in the front suspension and on the outside of the left front
tire is worn. i'm thinking ball joints? what do you think
thanks

Wow! A lot in common on this site. I know this is a pretty much dedicated
site, but:
Due mainly to age, I've owned a lot of cars that I wish I still had, but the
one I still pine for is my red, 1962 P1800 (body by Jensen) that I traded,
like a dolt, on a new, "cool" 1972 Javelin because I had just received my
first livable pay check!
I've had my eyeball on a red 1965 for a couple of years now, owned and
restored by one of my high school classmates, but can't shake him loose.
If anyone else has any interest in the P1800, there is a mechanic who
specializes in restoring and just fixing them on Route 32 in Ottsville, PA, between
Riegelsville and Easton PA.
On a more appropriate note, my SEC just passed NJ inspection and I am now
relatively free from worry.
Enjoy the warm weather, those of you who are on the East Coast, USA.

I also
had to rent a car for 3 weeks (just my luck the afternoon before I brought
it in a Jag was towed in needing the heads done so I lost a few d ay
s). fyi...Alternator was replaced 2 months ago and the timing belt and
tensioner have around 30k on them.
I'm 6'2" 245 pounds and the seat felt good with enough
legroom.
