You require a proper vacumn recovery pump unit. You can make one using a refrigerator pump and various piping. If you search the web you will find many successful home made units. But what I do is go to a refig tech and have the system vacumned out and have them pull a vacumn to the spec. Then I wait a day or two and put my gauges on it to see if it is still holding a vacumn. If it is I then do a full charge. If it isn't I have it leak checked and repair as necessary. If its a very minor leak, I install a leak sealer with the coolant. Remember if it leaks a bit during the season, so what, add a little more, it only takes about 2 minutes to top up.
Warnings!!!!!!!! YOU USE LESS OF THIS COOLANT THAN R12 R134. DO NOT OVER FILL. THE OLD WAY OF LOOKING IN THE SIGHT GLASS UNTIL THE BUBBLES DISAPPEAR DOES NOT APPLY WITH THIS PRODUCT. IF YOU MENTION TO THE REFIG TECH WHAT YOU ARE DOING, BE PREPARED FOR ALL THE B.S. HE WILL GIVE YOU. JUST TELL HIM YOU ARE DOING SOME WORK ON THE CAR AND WANT THE COOLANT REMOVED. GENERALLY WHEN THEY EVACUATE THE UNIT THEY DO NOT REMOVE THE OIL. THEREFORE YOU USUALLY DO NOT NEED TO ADD OIL.
Rule of thumb. If your system was working OK, all you may have to do is top up.
This is just a skinny on the subject. As I said, educate yourself, its not complicated, but you need to have confidence in what you are doing. I researched for over a month before I decided. I bought the simple kit first and graduated to the professional unit.
Everything you need to know is on the website.
If there are specific questions that you need clairity on after you read up, I'll attempt to answer for the group. I'm not a professional refig tech. Just educated and self taught. What I didn't know I asked those who did.
Good Luck, Iain

Sounds pretty interesting. I keep seeing references to creating a vacuum when recycling the A/C system. What kind of vacuum pump are they talking about? Will one of those hand held plastic vacuum pumps work?
Thanks for all the replies, I now have many different ways to do this.

years now. Have personally recharged and topped up over 40 vehicles, all
makes and models. Get educated on it, you'll love it. Find out why it is the
standard in Europe. Find out the political reasons you are forced to use
r134. You can buy a complete professional recharge kit for around $150. Or a
top up kit for less than $50 with the coolant.
This subject comes up every year. I don't want to get into a discussion
about it. I just know it works. I have no affiliation to this product.
Iain.
