[W126 Coupe] A/C charge/conversion

Sounds pretty interesting. I keep seeing references to creating a vacuum
when recycling the A/C system. What kind of vacuum pump are they talking
about? Will one of those hand held plastic vacuum pumps work?
Thanks for all the replies, I now have many different ways to do this.
