[W126 Coupe] Engine Hesitation. Gas Smell.

Hi Barry:
You may be describing two different issues. Fuel: Where you report the
smell of gas, I'd put a set of gauges on the fuel distributor and run
the required diagnostics first. If you don't have the fuel gauges
(really the only way to figure out fuel related problems) you could
start by un-clipping the electrical connector on the cold start injector
to see if the stutter and smell dissipate. If you see some improvement,
then I'd pull the injector and run the required test. This will clear
both the cold start valve and the engine temp sensor if it all checks out.
Electric: You might as well inspect the cap, rotor, wires and plugs.
Wire inspection is best done at night, just look for arcing. Does this
situation seem worse in damp, rainy conditions? Then dig into the cap,
rotor and plug condition.
Good luck,
Dick
