[W126 Coupe] Engine Hesitation. Gas Smell.

My 1989 560SEC Euro has two problems I hope the group can help me with.

 

The engine has an intermittent hesitation at low throttle.  When I'm in top
gear between about 50 kph and 80 kph (30 mph - 50 mph) and my foot is just
depressing the accelerator, the engine sometimes hesitates (stutters,
misses?).  This also happens when the cruise control is engaged, so it's not
my foot twitching ;-)

 

Until the engine has warmed up, there is often a strong smell of gasoline.
I have changed out the EVA valve and that did not solve the problem.

 

Your collective wisdom is both wanted and appreciated.
