[W126 Coupe] transmission problem

Hi Gordon.

Why not do the fluid change including torque converter and the filter to
see if this clears the problem. It's the least expensive route. Where
you live in an area where highways rule. At least that was how I felt
when running between Omaha, Lincoln and York on a few occasions. You
may just have a fouled filter screen after 26k since the last change and
if the torque converter was not drained you'd have started with aged
fluid anyway.

Anyone touch the linkages or lubed them of late? Perhaps the shift
linkage just needs a bit of atf at the ball socket? If it's stiff it
may not be releasing fully as it should. Think there's a return spring
on the linkage as well. Worth checking. All guesses here!

I drove an MB from Philly to Boston (just wanted the engine out of the
beast) that had that same problem but, I did not bother to try and
figure out why it behaved that way. Carefully placing it up in Neutral
at speed and then back to Drive with brief foot off the pedal allowed
it to shift up to 4th and then it was just cruise along at 55-60 no
more. It had been sitting a long long time.

Anyway, good luck.
