[W126 Coupe] transmission problem

My 1989 SEC shifts down to 3rd gear for no reason at most any speed above 45 mph. It won't shift back to 4th unless I put it in neutral and then back to drive or come to a complete stop. I disconnected the electric shift wire at the rear of the transmission on the passenger side. That did not alleviate the problem.
Can I assume that this problem has nothing to do with my first gear start module? Any other suggestions? Do I have a bad tranny even though the car only has 66,000 miles. It was serviced at 40,000 miles several years ago. The fluid looks and smells fine.
Thanks for any ideas.
