[W126 Coupe] Turbo/supercharger

That's fair. I didn't realize you were the source - that's rare - and
quite a feat - I am very impressed. Do you produce them in batches,
single order, got any sittin' on the shelf? Can't promis I'll buy, but
I'd be interested in the price (and then I'll have to ask the wife -
sorry). If I can afford the price I'd really like to know at least the
valve duration so I can determine if it's too radical (rough idle, low
end loss) before I bite the bullet. I wouldn't want the thing to rattle
like a Top Fuelie :-)

But I know what you mean about the time/effort. I am a mechanical
engineer by profession (unfortunately), and I spent many, many hours not
just making the parts for the supercharger set-up (probably around
100-200hrs - the hardest part was the intake adapter which I machined
out of a 3x4x6" block of aluminum with a drill press - either that or
pay a machine shop $500. My garage is my sanctuary - so it was a win/win
for me), but research, design of the fuel system mods, etc. So I'm happy
to share my plans, but at a (comparatively small) cost, so that I may
finance other mods, such as cams, headers, etc.

It's funny though, some of the cars I've put to shame - the look on the
other guys face when they can't believe they got smoked by an 18 year
old MB which looks and sounds stock on the outside - except for the
supercharger whistle, which I guess they did not hear. Makes all the
effort worth while - the wife, she's not so convinced. She thinks guys
like us need to grow up (and be boring?!?) :-)

Thanks and be good.

Hello Alex,

I do have cams, I've started producing them in the last 1/2 year after
debating what specs to use for some time. Sorry to say I'm none to
keen on releasing the #'s, as it took me considerable time/effort to get
where I am (Starting w/ AMG cams etc, etc..).

Hi Jonathan,

Good points you make - yes, I scratch my head too when I look at the
exhaust. You mention you have some after market cams - do you have the
source/specs on them - I haven't seen anything for the 560. Thanks.

"Finally - be careful when changing exhaust to headers - you loose a lot
more bottom end torque (where you do most of your driving) than you gain
in top end HP. The whole system has to be balanced and match. Exhaust
system design is actually a very complex and interesting. You can gain
or loose 10-20% based on the design and free-flow is not always a
positive. Even when it is, geometry (tube diameters/lengths, even firing
order greatly influences the output."
I have to comment on my experience with headers/cast tri y's..the two
cars I know that are header equipped not only make more up top but are
making more power sooner.
The US exhaust system is one of the worst designs ever to make it on a
production car. Just allowing this car to breathe properly had netted
me 20 RWHP and 12 ft/lbs. I'll have another car running AMG spec
headers in the next few months and will of course post my results here.

"Typically you'd only go to headers if you upgraded to high flow cams
and heads and you are doing all your driving above 4K (like on a track).
Most people I know don't run their car on a track - otherwise it's a
waste. That may be why nothing much is happening below 4K."
I've been running a hot cam in one of my cars and have to say the top
end rush is addictive.. The only way I really notice a loss of low end
is by jumping back and forth from a stock 560 and back into my built
car. She still pulls well down low, but instead of getting sluggish
over 4K everything takes on a whole new urgency. Makes me smile every
day, many times a day;-)
