You ought to buy yourself an official MB service manual CD (if you can
no longer get it from 1-800-FOR-MERC try www.blueridgemb.com)
I'm not saying for sure your problem is a timing chain, though with 183k
miles it's a good idea anyways since these are interference engines and
if it goes it take sthe engine with it. While you're in there might as
well replace the upper guides (plastic) too and check the plastic
fittings that oil the cams.
