Bob,
I have a spare compressor (off the SEC) to which you're welcome and I can
recommend a set of dual electric fans to replace the engine driven one to
cool it all. Then the R134 does fine.
Later,
Mike R.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] AC Problem
The AC compressor on my wife's '87 560SL has started making some horrendous
noise. It will pump for a few minutes and then lock up and start the belt to
squealing among other noises. I don't think it's overcharged as it was fine
last season and nothing has been done to the system. To me, it sounds like
the compressor has failed.
I have heard that R134 doesn't work all that well in a system designed for
R12 (which this system still is) and we do live in Vegas so the AC needs to
work well. But.....since I'm looking at a new compressor, this would be the
opportune time to switch to R134. I have also heard that the hoses for the
R12 system will slowly leak R134 as it is a smaller molecule. Any truth to
that?
I'm planning on doing the work myself and looking to buy a new (not rebuilt)
compressor, rcvr/dryer, seal kit, hi pressure sw, temperature sw, expansion
valve, and possibly a retrofit kit if I decide to go with R134. Any other
components that should be replaced?
With the compressor, rcvr/dryer, and expansion valve removed, I planned on
using compressed air to blow out the evap and condenser both directions. Is
this not a good idea, and/or is there a better way to clean out the system?
Any thoughts on using R134 in this desert car? I'm not adverse to using
DuraCool either and stay with the R12 like system. It is a daily driver.
