[W126 Coupe] AC Problem

I have plenty of experience with AC problems in the SEC. After several attempts at fixing, etc, what finally did it was flushing it properly, using dealer parts, and doing it right. The flushing was done with liquid flush, not air. I'm not sure air is the right thing to use but I'm no expert. When we got the Benz compressor, it said right in the paperwork that they recommended replacing the AC manifold hose as well - which it did not say in any of the aftermarket ones I had previously tried. And I believe you need to pull vacuum on the system and make sure it holds that vacuum for a certain length of time before charging it up again. Unless you have the right tools, that is probably hard to do. Also, you need to make sure you don't overcharge the system and that the high and low pressures are correct when charged, which again, is hard to check without the proper guages. I think I would stick with the R12 if you can. I did and I'm very happy. MarkusMarkus

The AC compressor on my wife's '87 560SL has started making some horrendous noise. It will pump for a few minutes and then lock up and start the belt to squealing among other noises. I don't think it's overcharged as it was fine last season and nothing has been done to the system. To me, it sounds like the compressor has failed. I have heard that R134 doesn't work all that well in a system designed for R12 (which this system still is) and we do live in Vegas so the AC needs to work well. But.....since I'm looking at a new compressor, this would be the opportune time to switch to R134. I have also heard that the hoses for the R12 system will slowly leak R134 as it is a smaller molecule. Any truth to that?I'm planning on doing the work myself and looking to buy a new (not rebuilt) compressor, rcvr/dryer, seal kit, hi pressure sw, temperature sw, expansion valve, and possibly a retrofit kit if I decide to go with R134. Any other components that should be replaced? With the
compressor, rcvr/dryer, and expansion valve removed, I planned on using compressed air to blow out the evap and condenser both directions. Is this not a good idea, and/or is there a better way to clean out the system?Any thoughts on using R134 in this desert car? I'm not adverse to using DuraCool either and stay with the R12 like system. It is a daily driver.Bob Cavazos1990 560SEC1987 560SL
