Has anyone figured out how to adjust the steering gearbox? Mine is too
loose
(in the SEL), allowing a shimmy in the steering, and I have NO idea how to
adjust that thing when it's just under the exhaust manifold. I'm thinking
that it might be easier by disconnecting the steering column from the top,
then taking the three mounting bolts loose that hold the box to the frame.
It looks like I either have to lower the steering box or raise the engine.

Mike,
I have done this successfully more than once.
The adjusting screw is a 5mm hex socket on top of the steering box with a
19mm locknut.
The adjuster screw needs to be turned CCW to "tighten" the steering. This
is just the opposite of most recirc ball steering gear boxes. If this
adjustment does not do the trick it is most likely due to excessive wear in
the gear. Box needs replacement.
I will pull up the procedure which you should follow since "too tight" is
not good.
