[W126 Coupe] Starter ring gear?

Pulling the trans and replacing the flywheel/ring gear is what my mechanic did about 3 years ago.

  Well I replaced my starter and I still have the problem.  Sometimes it
  just grinds without engaging, and even when it does, it makes a sound
  evidently when the missing toot spot comes around.  Is there an easy fix
  or am I pulling the trans and replacing the flywheel/ring gear?  Will
  any 500/560 fit?
