1. Use a shower curtain or blanket over the engine and fenders. This keeps
the trash off the engine and the adhesive for the new pad off the painted
surfaces.
2. Pull off the old hood, scrape it with something non-metallic, then wire
brush the remnants. Don't need to remove ALL traces of the old adhesive. I
used a wire brush (hand version) to clean the underside of the hood, and
then sprayed on the new adhesive.
3. After the old one is off, dry fit the new one a couple of times because
the 3M 8090 gives you one chance only to get it right. I started at the
bottom on the SEC and worked my way to the top (grill end) of the hood.
4. RTFM for the adhesive. I believe in this case you want to use the whole
can of adhesive. Put the new pad on the shower curtain covering the engine
and fenders, then spray the hood, then the pad, then another coat to the
hood, then finish off the can on the pad.
5. Wait the required minutes and install the hood pad.
6. Go drink beer.
Later,
Mike R.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] Hood pad replacement
I guess I'll try to tackle the hood pad replacement on my R129 today.
The front edge has some sort of plastic plug/rivet things, but the pad
is mostly glued to the underside of the hood. Any suggestions on
easiest way to scrape the old pad from the hood, or perhaps some sort
of solvent to remove the last bits of it without eating through the
paint or hood?
Thanks,
Paul
