>From what you describe, it sounds likely that either the Neutral Safety Switch... or the Ignition Switch have problems. If, when the no start symptoms arise, you can cycle the ignition key several time and the starter then functions..... I'd change out the ignition switch. However, if that doesn't do the trick, and it will only respond to cycling the gear lever... I'd take a long hard look at the neutral safety switch.
In addition, there are some inexpensive shifter bushings in the linkage that wear out and can give problems.
