[W126 Coupe] What is this part?

Actually, it protects that aluminum lip on the hood where it contacts
the chassis/fender pin and should allow the hood to close as it should
without raising the contour 6 inches as you mentioned. I was very
careful removing and re-installing those two clips when painting the new
hood on the 86 300SE after my oldest son used the car for dear hunting
last fall. I would think it prevents the metal from fatigue and
preserves the paint on the chassis/fender posts and the lip on the
hood. Where you are talking about a full restoral of your sedan,
perhaps the body shop can put those in for you to make the car perfect.
