If someone's tranny is operating normally, but they just want firmer
shifts, can they do that adjustment or will it increase stress on the
tranny?

Hi Bob:
What you describe is probably not vacuum related. When vacuum is
disconnected you will get a hard (bang) shift condition that is the
opposite of what you describe. Far more likely that as Matt suggests
you need a fluid and filter change with the torque converter drained as
well (this should always be done and you should be there to observe it
is done and the drain plug replaced). If that does not instantly clear
the problem, go to the drivers side of the transmission and look for a
little rubber boot (vacuum modulator) and lift the boot to locate a 'T'
shaped adjustment. Turn 1 click or detente clockwise at a time and test
drive to see if shifting firmness returns. It may take more than one
adjustment but never move it more than 1 detente at a time before road
testing. If this too fails, you may have a tranny issue requiring a
rebuild. When the fluid is changed look at the condition of the pan
(sludge/metal present) and do the same for the fine mesh screen on the
tranny filter. Let us know what you find.
Good luck,
Dick
