The 500 isn't totally straight. You'd also need an engine computer. If
you are going to do this, you might as well go with a euro 500 since the
us 500 is only slightly less anemic than the us 380 (and more anemic
than a euro 380). This will require an engine computer, exhaust system,
and a euro fuel distributor (you can one of these rebuilt by CIS for
like $400).

Figment,
A 560 engine is not a straightforward swap for a 380.
You'd have to change over EVERYTHING. You might as well go the whole hog
and put in an M119 instead.
If I remember correctly, the pre-85 500 engine is a straight drop-in.
Might be the way to go.
Cheers,
Axel

What's a good price for a used 560 SEC engine? This is presuming an
unknown mileage, but just the words, "very clean".
What should I look for? What should I try to avoid? I am wanting to put
a 560 engine into my 380 SEC. The reason is that my 380 SEC's camshaft,
journal header screws are stripped and the work to fix it may equal that
to just replace the engine.
Is it possible to put a 560 engine into a 1982 380 SEC?
Can the A/C compressor, ecu, alternator, starter fit from the 380 work
on the 560? Do I need to change the transmission as well?
I'd appreciate the helpful suggestions.

If the interior is dark blue, I'd be interested in a rear package shelf
assembly for my '84 SEC.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] 83 380 SEC vs 86 560 SEC
I smashed the front of my 86 560 SEC and destroyed both fans, both
radiators, both headlights, the grill and hood--and bent the cross
member that holds the radiators, fans, etc. Fenders and bumber not
damaged. (Although, pushing back on the cross member has likely pulled
the fenders a bit--they don't appear to be damaged.)
I have the opportunity to acquire an 83 380 SEC--which is currently on
blocks, but which the proposed seller, a member of this forum, states
is in running condition (engine runs, I guess.) Neither of us being an
expert, we are wondering whether the above-listed damaged parts will
work straight across from the 83 380 to the 86 560. The seller is
proposing to deliver the car to me at an affordable price. I
understand, but haven't yet verified, that the entire front piece--the
cross member carrying the radiators and fans--can be cut out and just
transferred over. Paint the hood the proper color and I'm done.
All comments very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi All,
Is Satish on this list?
He helped me with questions when I bought my 89 560 SEC last Feb. 05. He
single handed was the one that put the icing on the cake for me to buy it.
After 8,000 miles of almost trouble free driving since I did my original
repairs (I had to put in new front wheel bearings and 2 rear tires last
month) I
now own probably one of the best cars that I have ever owned (I have owned
over 200 cars and I have 12 now). I am a very happy W126 owner with 166,000
on
her.
I also find it strange that when these 560 SEC's were new, I saw them on the
road all of the time and now I rarely see them at all.
I just bought a 1980 450SL (with 68,000 original miles) that I will use with
the top down for the summer and I will use the 560 SEC sparingly during the
warm months.
So after all of this yapping I just wanted to thank Satish where ever he may
be, for walking me through the buy of this car and being there for a
stranger.

Hello!
Yes, just give me a ring at (248) 668-6793 anytime. Yes, the number of
SECs are disappearing rapidly. Just look at Ebay...there used to be
dozens for sale. Now it's only a few at a time.
Also, putting in a 5.6L V8 into a pre-1986 SEC/SEL requires as much
rewiring as installing a CIS-E M119 engine into the same vehicle.
EVERYTHING must be changed.

My headliner, or rather, the foam, gave way and I ended up replacing
the headliner with a vinyl material that looked great, but was not
able to form well in the corners--fabric can stretch in more
directions than vinyl.
Very soon I will be installing an OEM Mercedes fabric that is made of
wool. The color is not an exact match to the original headliner (so I
have to do the sunroof also) but it works well with the car. I found
the material at World Upholstery (www.worlduph.com) which is in
Southern California.

No it has nothing to do with the cold. Hell it has

All,
Its been awhile since I have posted but I have been following the list. Due
to some changes in my family situation I have neither the time or energy to
devote to my SEC. Many new parts. Chain and rails, fuel pump and
accumulator, MSD ignition system, cat converter, new injectors and seals,
rebuilt fuel distributor, climate control diaphragms, all front suspension
parts except lower control arm bushings, rear diff mount, brakes and rear
calipers rebuilt with new rear rotors, starter, handmade Nardi wood steering
wheel, Kenwood head unit with a/d/s signal processor and a/d/s power amp,
less than 150 miles on brand new Bridgestone Potenza 225/50/16's on Centra
wheels. Motor and trans are in great shape. It idles so smooth you can't
tell its running. 122K miles. On the negative side, some rear window
delamination, dash cracked, left rear top seat seams split and cracked, A/C
condenser has a leak. You can see some pics in the members section. I
thought I would offer it to the gr
oup before the anyone else.

I recently had this problem. I sprayed some WD-40 into the
lock and that helped a bit. I could lock the door but not unlock it.
After doing some research online I found that WD-40 is the worse stuff
you can use. Get some graphite powder (automotive stores carry it) and
spray a little into the lock. Put your key in and out of the lock many
times and it should begin to work. Let us know if that works for you.

It has to be a 4-wheel alignment. My independent tech charges $80
describing it as not hte best price for an alignment but not the worst
either.

All,
Its been awhile since I have posted but I have been following the list.
Due to some changes in my family situation I have neither the time or energy
to devote to my SEC.
thought I would offer it to the
group before the anyone else.

These were taken before the car was lowered using eibach springs. I'm
located in Dayton Ohio. $4250.00 Contact me off list at the address below if
you have any interest.

My 82 380SEC has that rediculous 85 MPH speedometer. I have picked up a 160
MPH unit from an 85 500SEL and changed the miles to match that of my
380....Can I swap them out directly or no? I'd just like to know what I'm
in for before I start taking it apart....things like calibration, or
ANYTHING, ... if someone can provide some insights....it would be
appreciated.

Ask the shop if they have the correct spreader bar for the toe-in
check and the centering pin for the steering gear. If they say
"Huh?", I'd go somewhere else.

Gary, the alignment for an MB needs to be done by someone familiar
with how they are done. They are a bit different. That's not to say
that various alignment shops can't do it, if they are aware of the
differences. If they don't use the correct tools/techniques, it will
not be right.
So if you don't know for sure whether a independent shop can do it
correctly, the MB dealer is the best bet.

Bruce,
The speedometers in our cars are electronic and the part itself is a
straight swap.
However, calibration is going to be an issue. I, and other members on this
list, have used a Dakota Digital SGI-5 to calibrate our speedometers after
swapping differentials, transmissions or wheels, but those were minor
adjustments compared to yours. At the most we would have to correct a 15 mph
difference. If I understand you correctly, you are trying to go from an 85
mph speedometer to a 160 mph speedometer. I'm not sure the Dakota device can
do that.
The first thing I would do would be to run you car with your old speedometer
and see what speed you are running at, for instance, 3,000 rpm. Then put the
new speedometer in and see what it shows at the same rpm. You could be in
luck and it would display correct speed, but at least you'd know how far off
it is.
Best of luck.
Cheers,
Axel

I haven't checked MBCoupes email in a while. I'm working on my website
right now. I'm on the East Coast, but have a great referral/relocation
company that we deal with. Check out www.TriangleConnection.com. We're
constantly tweaking it. I'll have to check about the cross linking. I
think we do, but not 100% sure. I've only been in real estate for a couple
years. I was in new construction in 2004 and general brokerage in 2005.
I'm in the Research Triangle of NC.
