The later 722.3XX's aren't so much smoother but they do have some updated
bits that contribute to the longevity of the box.  After '89 you get the
updated B2, and I believe there were some modifications made to the valve
body along the way.  I also know there were quite a few small TSB's that
were applied to the later boxes...and yes, it will bolt right up to your
car.

Finding the later 140 etc boxes is handy but coming across them in low
mileage form is a bit of a dig..  You also might consider talking w/ a re
builder to see if they will take your old trans as a partial core in
exchange for a later 722.350/270 etc..

Then you can switch your CIS over to CIS E, get a euro EZL and have it
communicate w/ your trans for quicker down shifts etc:)
