I don't know how to fix the problem, but I am familiar with the noise you mention. It occurs when there is no oil in the top half of the motor, it is dry. As soon as the oil starts to circulate the sound goes away. At least I think that is what it is. Mine does it occasionally, in the small brick shed I store the car in the sound liberally echoes around and that is what it sounds like to me.

Hi,
I am starting to develop a more frequent ticking in my 89 560 SEC motor.
It used to happen once every month now it is happening every other day.
When I do my first start of the day I hear a ticking in the motor until I rev it a few times or drive it to a decent rev then it goes away.
The motor is also not starting as quickly as it was (more cranking) even a month back. I even have to hold the gas pedal to the floor once in a while to start it.
The car has 171,000 on it.
At 160,000 I had a new fuel dist, new timing chain & tensioner, plugs, dist cap & rotor, idle speed switch, idle speed control actuator, lambda set, all fuel filters & (oil filters, & oil 5,000 with Mobil 1), timing set, new valve cover gaskets. I think a little more but I cannot recall.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Jack
