[W126 Coupe] third break light

Hi Edward,
Thanks for the info about the seal.

Haha, paperwork? You talk with the man, who happened to live in Europe... ;-) I shipped my 560 from Germany, and it took me about a month to process all the formalities from the day I bought a car to the one I could go for a ride for a first time. And it wasn't so bad, since both the Germany and Poland are members of the European Union (duty-free trade, etc.). If I'd like to buy my SEC in the US, all the taxes, duties, etc. would cost me AT LEAST as much as the car's price itself.

And things are gettig worse as there is a new tax on imported used cars on the way. It'll depend on the car's age and engine size - of coarse, in a name of 'safety' and 'ecological' reasons. As you wrote - lots of BS stuff... :-\

Best regards,
Michal

  Hi Michael,

On my CHMSL, there is a seal between the unit and the glass, it's just a very soft rubber, and once everything is mounted right, it just lightly presses against the glass.

There is a LOT of paperwork required to bring a car in. Insurance and registration can be a problem every time you renew. In California, it is virtually impossible because of smog regulations (lot's of BS stuff) and the 'safety' equipment being 'not-present'.

  Edward

  Hi Steve,

Many thanks for the great info. So, to sum up:

  - what I need is the lamp and the mounting bracket plus a cable/plug

  - the lamp is not glued to the window and there is no rubber seal

PS.1. Thanks for the offer, but it must be black ;-)

PS.2. I got power sunshade on my car. It's quite useful, and looks great :-)

PS.3. Did you removed the third break light just for the "style" reasons? If the Euro SEC's are so worshipped in the USA, why so rarely does Americans import these cars from Germany, Poland or whatever? Are there some high duty taxes or another legal problems?

    Michal,

The rear hat tray is the same for both US and Euro cars, it is also the same for cars with the sun shade. When you remove the tray and turn it over you will see three or four, I don't recall holes in the tray that covered by the fabric. These are the holes to mount the high brake light bracket. I know this from doing the reverse, I recovered my tray and deleted the third brake light. I also have a sun shade from a donor car that I will get around to someday! It also fits the on standard tray.

I would offer you mine however it is tan, look for an assembly in the Seattle area more days of cloud cover than anywhere else in the US = less sun damage.

@Jason - thanks for the info

@Jonathan - I'll need to find someone parting out the SEC with black interior, and we'll see what they have. But are you sure that the hat tray is different in Euro and US cars? I've tried to find out at detali.ru, but it seems to not cover the American models. :-/

PS. You see, in the USA - as I know - you like to 'europeize' your SEC's (euro headlights, euro bumpers, etc.). Living here in Europe, on the other hand, I'd be most happy if I could have some pure US-spec 560SEC, with all the stuff like long bumpers, 'ugly' sealed beam headlights, different headlight wipers, side markers, mph speedometer, 6-loudspeaker audio, auto A/C etc. Third break light is one of such things, not to mention the safety improvement.

Besides - it just looks nice to me :-)

I should have a good used mount..but finding the housing (especially the rear removable part that allows bulb changes) in good used is going to be a hard dig...they all get badly cooked/brittle w/ age.

IMHO I wouldn't even bother installing one..I'd wager the car looks Much cleaner back there w/o the light installed. I'd wager you'll also need an additional harness and you'll have to modify the hat tray (Very expensive if any mistakes are made).

There is a mounting bracket that it slips on to as memory serves me. The light slips on to the bracket. So you will need this item to properly mount it. I would think if you ask around on here someone who is parting out a car you can probably get the mount and light. That is assuming the mount is removable in an easy manner. Its a tight space where the mount is to the glass. I only remember this because when they tinted my windows, the poor guy cut his hand. So, I do recall seeing a bracket there.

        Hi guys,

        I got some less-typical issue.

As my 560SEC is Euro version, it wasn't orginally equipped with third break light, which could be found on US cars. I'm going to install that lamp by myself, but definitely it has to be the original MB part from an American SEC (not some aftermarket LED bar, etc.). :-)

I crawled through many, many pics of US SEC's but I found only a few with a CHMSL visible.

What I know at the moment is, that the lamp itself is a thing like this:

        http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-W124-W126-W201-Third-Brake-Light-BEIGE_W0QQitemZ230020190295QQihZ013QQcategoryZ42613QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

and looks to be mounted a few centimeters above the rear hat tray.

What else do I need to install the lamp? Was it somehow glued to the rear window glass? If so, was there any rubber seal? Or maybe some mounting bracket supporting the lamp from bottom?

Any help will be appreciated. It would be absolutely great if some of you could take a few photos of the lamp on their US car, with details of mounting visible.

        Best regards from Poland,

        Michal Wolosiak
