Hi Pete:
It does sound like your idle control module is part of the idle problem
based on your swap. I'd check the overvoltage protection relay as this
can cause the failure of a new or rebuilt idle control module if it too
has gone bad. You may want to remove the air slider valve, clean it
with carb spray to remove any build-up and check/replace the condition
of the two hoses which if loose or poor fitting will allow un-regulated
air to enter the air volume meter and intake. Check with Ken at
<http://www.benz-store.com> for the correct match to your original idle
control module. The odometer would likely be the gears (there is an
on-line source, I 'd have to look this up) which you can get and do
yourself if you are inclined. The clock would likely be the two
capacitors that fail and they are available at Radio Shack. You might
also check the clock time setting stem and spring to make sure they are
not holding the clock back as well as the presence of 12vdc to the clock
works. The soldered lug is(-12vdc) on the back of the clock module and
the single insulated plug to the male spade lug is(+12vdc).
As for the 72 350SL with the 450 motor I think it's a keeper unless it's
in really tough shape. has the euro bumpers and the V-8 too boot. Only
issue would be if the US gov't changed out the original gear and reduced
the power in the process.
Just my 2.
Take care,
Dick
