Thanks Dick,

I did figure it out after I posted this. That cover looked like it was
molded into the housing. After digging through to CD I found out that that
thing comes off.

It's on the wife's '84 500sel euro, but it's pretty much the same as my
SEC's.

Where's the one that looks like a cigarette pack? Didn't see that one.

Depending on your model year Jack it's either a vacuum element looking like
a pack of cigarettes or it's the cylinder you are already familiar with from
the defrost vent , etc. First, there is a black plastic cover that you need
to carefully pry off of the heater box which covers the arm that connects
the vacuum element to the heater box leg flap linkage.
Once you get the cover off it should be fairly obvious as to unclipping the
vacuum element arm from the flap linkage and lifting or twisting the vacuum
element off of the holder on the heater box.. When done you should have the
vacuum element and the metal linkage in your hand. So, you are removing both
the vacuum element and the metal linkage in one step.

Be careful not to jostle the heater box flap linkage (the point where the
vacuum arm clips in place) too much as the pivots inside the heater box can
only be repaired by removing the entire box. Not a fun job at all! Anyway,
it's a quick fix with the cover out of the way and the element with arm in
your hands.

Regards,

Dick
