To remove the radio from a 124:  Lift the liner material (carpet) from the tray behind the switch/shifter consol to expose one Philips screw.  Unscrew and lift to remove the wood window switch panel.  (It may make a sharp cracking noise which is alarming but is normal.)  You may have to remove some switch connections to access the area below the ashtray.  (Particularly if you have heated seats)  Unscrew the two screws holding the ashtray assembly in place and remove it.  The radio should be easy to access now.
