I think the soldering iron idea sounds fine. The loom casing is very thin, 
whilst the individual wire casing is much thicker.

I still think the box cutter is best, despite my injury ! I was stupid 
enough to rest the wire on my thigh when cutting....hence when it slipped, 
it fell straight on my thigh, cutting a nice clean 3 inch and 1 cm deep line 
!

If you rest the loom on a worktop and make sure no part of your body is in 
the firing line should the cutter slip, then it'll be the quickest and 
cleanest way, IMO.
