Many thanks to all, especially Dick Spellman, my trans now shifts like
butter. A few obesevations:

1. It was much, much easier to drain the sump/t-converter, clean all and
reinstall with new filter/gasket than I anticipated. A few places here
(Dallas) wanted $200+ to do this.

2. Lining up the t-converter drain plug was the hardest. I gave up on
accessing the crank nut to rotate the engine. Instead, I disconnetcted the
high-tension lead and had a friend bump the starter. Quite impossible to
get the plug lined up with the window but I got it within inches and then
nudged it into view with a screwdriver leveraged on the grate.

3. The evacuated fluid looked like a murky soup and totaled 5.5 litres. Why
was it showing full at this low volume? Refilled with the recommended 8.1
litres. I realized that over or under-torquing the pan (given the thickness
of the gasket) could give different dipstick readings.

Thanks again,

Jeff Khan
