Pumping the tires up to 40psi is a bit much, especially on the stock
size tires. You'll have no more contact patch. I wouldn't go higher than
34F 36R. And if you are only running rich enough that the idle is
bearable (but not as good as it could be) your cylinders are going to be
running hot and you'll burn a valve or a piston or something.

12mpg, damn boy, I couldn't afford that. Lean out air mass meter, pump
the tires up to 40 lbs.
I lean out the air mass meter just to the point where the engine starts
heaving or idling roughly, then
I richen it until the idle is bearable in Drive. I'm getting 16mpg in
town and 19-20 on the Hwy.
It's not a rocket off the line, but these days, if I want rocketship
like acceleration out of a stop sign or red light,
I'd be driving a different car.
BTW - a new set of injectors, injector seals and injector holders
greatly improved idle stability, Gas mileage, and overall drivability.
It was the single best investment that I've made in the car in the last
year.
That little project cost me just under $400.00 and 3.5 hours.
I don;t know why I waited so long.
