RE: Would my emergency brake shoes cause the rear brakes to squeal loudly
when I back up like a bus squealing to a stop? They only squeal when I apply
the brakes backing up now.

Hi John,

That isn¹t the parking brake shoes. It is the rear pads vibrating under very
light pedal pressure. We used to have customer complaints for the very same
thing when I worked in Volvo service. These were cars with usually low
mileage.. under warranty, etc.

Usually the fix would entail removing brake dust buildup from the pads, pad
backs, and pad carrier slots. Then a thin layer of brake paste was applied
to the backs, pad edges, and pad slots, and everything reassembled. Problem
solved ­ every time. This is a non safety issue, to my mind.

I believe, unless your car has ASR, there won¹t be any sensors at the rear.
