[W126 Coupe] Vacuum

Would anyone happen to know what the vacuum tube about 6 inches behind the cold start valve and connected to the engine block is responsible for. Mine had come off and after reconnecting it the car seems to be "hunting" at slower speeds and holding the gears longer, or maybe it could be my imagination.

Any help appreciated.
