[W126 Coupe] what's out of adjustment

Well, I solved the rough running that gets cleared out by goosing it in
neutral. What it was is I was operating on the edge of leanness after
finding that gives me the best 1/4 ETs, but when the temps went up (and
possibly as the EPA weakened the standards for fuel because of Katrina)
this became just slightly too lean. I richened it back up about 1/6 of a
turn and that solved it.

As far as the instant start, I don't whether or not this fixed it, since
I have only started it 3 times since richening it back up, and the
instant start was VERY intermittent (though it has done it once almost,
it did an instant start and then almost died - maybe 100rpm or so - and
then brought itself back up). By normal starting length, I meant like 1
second or so (maybe as long as 2, definitely not longer). I don't know
why being lean would cause the instant start (followed by instant stall)
issue, so I'm not holding my breath.

Richard;

I trust you have solved your "problem"?? but if not....

Check out the cold start system. The cold start engine temp sensor
could be
intermittent, or the cold start injector itself malfunctioning. The
injector could "leak" fuel into the intake manifold causing the instant
start when the normal injection has not picked up yet, and/or the cold

start injector malfunctions when the engine is running and warm thus
enrichening the mixture. You can test the sensor with a meter, and the
injector by taking it out and watching it function.

Possible, but a longshot, and really difficult if it is an intermittent
problem!

My first inclination to the rough running was to suspect the ignition
system, but (a) you have replaced everything, and (b) it doesn't explain
the
instant start.

When you say "normal" what do you mean? Does it turn over a couple of
times
for 2 seconds? or many times for 10 seconds?

Strange. If you have found out what it is I'm sure others could benefit

from it.
