[W126 Coupe] Passenger Door Handle will not open door

Hi Bob:

A couple of questions.

You are placing the door handle nose first (sliding forward) and then seating the rear with the long pin in the door panel with the last effort being the sliding of the door handle rearward to engage the nose locking screw in the door panel slot?

Did you have the door handles themselves painted?  If so, is it possible one was damaged during this process?

Right away it sounds like you have something a miss with the door handle and not the gear in the door.  Please confirm that both door handles behave in the same manner which is that the door handle cam forces the plate into the door when you lift the outer door handle to open the door.  This can/should be done on a table.
