[W126 Coupe] Another AC Problem

The pulley didn't rotate and when it was pulled balls were missing from the
bearing and some were distorted/torn up.

        Tom,

In general belts shouldn't "move" much more than 1/2 an inch or so
when you push down on them. You don't want them too tight or too loose.

Out of curiosity, how do you know the idler pulley was seized?
Unfortunately this sounds all too similar to an ordeal I had, I can tell you
offline how it got resolved in the end and what the problem was if you are
interested.

          Jason,
There is definitely not 2 different sets of noises, only 1 which
keeps the
same pitch regardless of speed. Given that the compressor has not
historically made noise, is it possible that it should all of a
sudden have
too much oil in the system?

How much deflection should I see in the belt to determine if it is
loose?
          Tom

          Tom,

It could be one that you have too much oil in the system. Yes, it
will cool
but it may make a horrible noise and possible with higher rpm make
a
screeching noise like bearings. If your getting two different set
of noises
then your compressor is shot its way to death.

          Jason
