I have no experience with the diesel motors but had interest at one time
and initially thought the 350SEL turbodiesel would be just the ticket.
Over time I too have heard to stay away from it but just cannot remember
exactly why. There was a serious design weakness maybe not enough
cylinder wall thickness or block strength. The only minor problem with
the 3.0 liter is the trap oxydizer and turbo adjustments. These problems
have been addressed by Stu Ritter who had a Denver shop for years and he
now writes for Star Mag. I'm thinking there is an e-mail group called
Easley-Ritter for more info. Satish knows Stu and could further direct
you. Jim Alexander

I'm thinking about getting a diesel as a daily driver. The issue is
whether to stick with the 3 ltr 5 cyl turbodiesel (these seem to be
pretty bullet proof) or go with the 3.5 ltr 6 cyl turbodiesel (1991
model year). One website mentioned numerous problems with the 3.5 ltr
motor that MB did not acknowledge. Anyone have any experience with
either of these vehicles?
