I've have had very good luck with batteries from Advance Auto Parts. There
isn't much else I'd buy from them, I know of too many nightmares especially with
their belts and rebuilt electrical parts, as opposed to the good luck I've
experienced with their batteries. They pro-rate them too, but never exercised
that option. I probably have 6 of them amongst my cars now.

The only M-B battery I have is in my 280SE 4.5. And I'll stick with it as

1- I have had absolutely no trouble with it
2- The car is shown in concours events and I want to keep it correct
3- I have seen people get dinged for incorrect batteries

Thanks for the chrome tipping the M-B pipes tip. I like that idea. Does the
plater hang the pipe so just the end goes through the plating process or mask it
to selectively plate the tips. I think Id like that on my 82 380SEC since I'm
doing exhaust work on it now.

Also, a new one. My 82 500SE has no cats on it. Can the correct exhaust pieces
be had in this country or am I on my own fabbing it? My import documentation
says it meets EPA emmissions requirements without them so I would obviously like
to keep it that way.

Timevalve has them, but IIRC Jonathan had a very bad experience with timevalve.

Hello,

I have an 83 500sec with Lorinser rs-90's 16" offset of 22.

I am thinking about Lorinser d-93 17" and am told I need to use spacers. What
is the low-down on spacers? Should I go with these or stay away from them?

Thanks in advance for help

Clay

Hello Clay:

At a minimum, I would not by wheels requiring spacers on the front hubs for your
83. The H&R spacers will NOT fit the front spindle properly unless you remove
the hub centric lip which is a safety feature. Latter model year SEC's do not
have this problem as the spindle design meets the H&R specifications. Spacers
in the rear are okay but I would not exceed 20mm. The wheel bolts must be a
precise length in the rear as to meet the number of threads for safe attachment
but, not be so long as to protrude through the back of the rear hub and impact
the emergency brake system.

You will be much happier if you get the correct wheel offset up front. I can
say this having been there and done that. Now running 18 inch Lorrinser RSK-2's
with the correct factory offset I sold the former 18's with D93 rim style and
spacers.

Regards,

Dick

Hi Bruce:

I would check with Jonathan or Rusty for your replacement exhaust on the 500SE.
I think the head pipes will be the only difference where you have the preferred
euro manifolds vs. the US DOT. I will tell you that while the Timevalve set-up
will fit nicely, there could be a serious downside. The stainless pipe did
resonate a noise into the passenger compartment from the engine bay on my 300SE.
It's not a loud exhaust noise but rather a hiss or tin like sound as the exhaust
travels through the head pipes just below the manifold. I'd say in a sedan like
your 500SE this would be unacceptable.

The original Mercedes pipe was made to deaden that sound. If your head pipes
are still in solid shape, why not get the mid and rear sections and have someone
make the connection. Should not be too difficult.

I have since replaced the head pipes on the one sedan I did with TimeValve using
a softer (non-stainless) pipe to eliminate the noise noted on the stainless
set-up. A smooth quiet ride is the norm in the sedan.

Good luck.

Dick

Good evening Clay,
I had the Lorinser 16's on my '83 also. Had to play the spacer
game.........not fun. Ended up going to the AMG 16's. As you put spacers
in-between the
wheel and the rotor, you lose the concentric fit of the factory wheel. It's
tapered like an ice cream cone. If you can find spacers with that cut to them
you
could be in high cotton. I could never get mine to set correctly. Best of luck
to you.
I'm still trying to sell my Lorinser wheels.

Have a good one,

Paul Niesen

You're back! Whatever happened to those 14's?
